The Institution of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is a federal agency established in 1996 by the Museum and Library Services Act. It is responsible for promoting, supporting, and enhancing the nation's museums and libraries. IMLS is based in the United States and is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums.
